DESCRIPTION:
EPW - Ganthony, Lombard Street, London, lever fusee, 45mm, multicolor gold case with beautiful urn and floral detail to rear, case rear tests as 18K gold, case band tests approximately 16K gold (very gradual fade of 18K solution on stone, no fade of 14K solution) and case bezel tests approximately 12K gold (very gradual fade of 14K solution on stone, no fade of 10K solution), beautifully engine turned fixed cuvette, inner cuvette with incuse casemaker's "A C" marking, multicolor gold dial with wreath around center, KWKS, table roller lever escapement with capped escape wheel, diamond endstone, likely 11J, gilt mvt, s#3143 with matching serial number within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 53.1 dwt (82.8 g), gross weight of case only with movement removed 25.1 dwt (39.0 g). Our very knowledgeable consignor identifies this watch as produced circa 1830, and Brian Loomes' "Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World" notes that Richard Ganthony was active at Lombard Street by 1811.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, some abrasion adjacent one balance jewel setting screw and few small mars adjacent another; excellent dial with some micro-fine scratches and mild contact marks; hour hand is missing, fine minute hand with some vertical bend near center; case bezel with fracture to lower segment of hinge tube causing play at hinge, case rear with punctured upper perimeter at latch area, case latch not being depressed by push necessitating rear to be snapped open and closed over latch, case shows hardly any wear, no dents or dings, superb engraving detail; tight bow with a fracture at its lower rear, push shows very little wear; crystal is missing.
